18/03/2020

Northeastern State of India, Tripura became the fifth Indian state to ban entry of foreign tourists due to coronavirus outbreak in the country. Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Manipur are the other states to have taken a similar measure.

The Indian State of Sikkim had banned the entry of foreign tourists as early as March 6 to avoid the spread of coronavirus. Similarly, Arunachal Pradesh took the same measure to avoid the spread of coronavirus in the state.  However, the bans have adversely affected the travel and tourism sector in the Northeastern states.

Taking preventive measure, many Indian states have shut down schools, colleges, and cinema halls till March 31 to avoid the spread of coronavirus in the country. India also suspended all tourist visas till April 15, except few categories like diplomatic and employment.

The center had announced that the coronavirus outbreak will be treated as ‘notified disaster’. This is to provide assistance under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF). Under the norms of assistance under the SDRF, INR 4 Lakh each will be provided as relief to families of the deceased, including those involved in response activities and relief operations.
