Hotel fined Rs 25,000 for charging Rs 442 for 2 bananas

The UT excise and taxation department has levied a fine of Rs 25,000 on a five-star hotel in Chandigarh for charging goods and services tax (GST) on two bananas.

The hotel was issued a show-cause notice after actor Rahul Bose’s tweet – about being charged Rs 442.50, including GST, for the two bananas – went viral. The hotel authorities were given time till 11am on Saturday to file their reply, but they sought more time, he said.

“So I am shooting in Chandigarh and I am staying at this beautiful suite… I was in the gym and I asked for two bananas and check the bill out,” Bose had tweeted. According to the bill shown in his video, Bose was charged for a ‘fruit platter’.
