Just for adults: Booze-infused candies set to enter mass market

16/10/2018

Amaretto sour, hibiscus Negroni and mocha espresso martini are a few of the just for-adults gummies that Smith & Sinclair wants you to serve at your cocktail parties. Its next flavor might be Purple Haze.

Michael Auerbach, a board member and investor in medical marijuana producer Tilray Inc, is injecting $2.6 million into one of the makers of alcohol-spiked candies through his Subversive Capital venture firm. Alcoholic beverages are already facing challenges from the cannabis industry, and Smith & Sinclair could add a new layer to the competition.

“Confectionery should be fun for adults too,” said Melanie Goldsmith, co-founder of the alcoholic-sweets startup. “We want to bring that spirit back and celebrate the kind of Willy-Wonka innovation that Britain was world-renowned for in the past.”

The company, founded in 2014, buys directly from distillers to make candies that pack the equivalent of about half a shot of hard liquor. A box of eight costs about $19.62 online.

Smith & Sinclair is also branching out into edible cocktail sprays along with effervescent tablets that add flavor and bubbles to a mixed drink. Smith & Sinclair will use the venture funding to expand in the UK and Europe and is preparing to enter the US by Christmas 2019, Goldsmith said. The hard-liquor-candy company also has its eyes on opportunities using cannabis: Goldsmith recently visited two Tilray facilities in Canada, and while she doesn’t have specific plans to go into edible marijuana, she’s closely watching the industry. “We are looking to the future at what developments are happening in the space,” Goldsmith said. “We have a really unique way to approach product innovation and marketing that would let us step in.”
