Maharashtra CM says no plan to allow liquor home delivery

16/10/2018

A day after state excise minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule announced a proposal to allow home delivery of liquor, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said no such decision has been taken. “No such decision has been taken and neither will it be taken,’’ the CM said in a text response to TOI on Sunday.

According to a bureaucrat, the excise department was flooded with protest messages from people following Bawankule’s announcement. “They said it would set a wrong precedent. The proposal is bad in law and uncalled for. It will will encourage illegal consumption and supply of liquor,’’ he said.

The medical community, too, termed it as an “outrageous” idea. “The intentions of the excise department may be good but the tool is seriously flawed,” said oncosurgeon Dr Pankaj Chaturvedi, who is also the deputy director, Centre for Cancer Epidemiology at Tata Memorial Centre.

Bawankule had told TOI on Saturday that his department has drafted a plan to permit purchase and home delivery of liquor via e-commerce platforms.
