Ride-hailing majors Ola and Uber have suspended operations in the national capital Delhi and other cities are likely to follow as the government has announced lockdown across 75 major districts in the country till March 31st to curb the spread of Coronavirus. Online food delivery application Zomato has also tweeted saying that it is operating at “30% capacity today in order to serve everyone who can’t cook at home (students, elderly, sick, etc.). We urge people to only order when they absolutely must.”

Uber is also suspending service till further notice in over another dozen cities as well like Jaipur, Ajmer, Kota, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Ludhiana, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Chandigarh, Dhanbad, Vishakhapatnam and Tirupati besides a few others. Ola is also operating with a “minimal network” across the country.

“The situation is evolving very rapidly and basic approach is that we want to help flatten the curve,” said an Uber executive, adding that consumers should open their mobile applications to check if services are available or not. Uber’s Intercity operations have also been suspended.

“Uber is complying with all Central and State Government directives related to its services for containing the spread of Coronavirus. We are communicating the status of specific cities with riders through our app,’’ said an Uber Spokesperson when contacted by TOI.

“Ola will continue to encourage citizens to limit travel only for essential emergency needs as per the Government’s directive. We will enable a minimal network of vehicles to support essential services in cities, wherever applicable, as part of this national effort to reduce the contagion of COVID-19,” said an Ola spokesperson.
