Zomato has laid off about 60 employees in Gurugram

09/08/2019

Zomato has laid off around 60 employees from its customer support team in Gurugram, dubbing it a correction carried out due to improvement in service quality over the last few months.

“The percentage of orders requiring support have come down significantly creating a small number of redundancies for 1.2% of our workforce,” a company spokesperson said. “Most of these redundancies are in the customer support department.”

The layoffs come as Zomato follows the industry in cutting costs by automating customer service functions. Companies are seen to be moving away from employing call centre workers, instead deploying chatbots that can answer customer queries without human intervention.

The food delivery firm had earlier laid off about 300 employees in 2015, a bulk of them in the United States, in a bid to reduce costs. Earlier this year, the company also sold its United Arab Emirates delivery business to the Berlin-based Delivery Hero for $172 million in a bid to shore up its cash reserves.

Zomato, which counts Ant Financial and Sequoia India among its investors, is currently in a heated battle with Swiggy for dominance in India’s online food orderingspace. Both companies have raised billions of dollars and are burning millions each month to subsidise the cost of food to win more customers.
